To Your Rescue- 365 Days of Roadside Assistance

Break-downs happen

No matter how well you maintain your vehicle, the possibility exists that you'll find yourself broke down, on the side of the road. The side of the road is a dangerous place. If your vehicle does fail while driving, it is best to try and maneuver to the right shoulder, out of traffic, if possible. In the event of a flat tire, you may feel that you are doing substantial damage, but generally, the worst you will do is damage a wheel or tire. Although it may cost more money to replace a wheel, it is better to risk damage to the wheel than to risk personal injury, or your life.

 Stay with your vehicle

If at all possible, avoid leaving your vehicle for help. Use a cell phone to call for help if necessary.  Many states, including Virginia, have a Motorist Assistance program, to help you in the event of a break down.  Virginia also has laws prohibiting walking alongside of the interstate. Doing so may also net you a citation on top any vehicle repairs.

Surviving a Breakdown

  • Don't panic
  • Turn on your hazard lights
  • Carefully, and safely, move your vehicle to the right shoulder, out of traffic
  • Stay in your vehicle if you can
  • Notify Roadside Assistance, or the State Police
  • Only perform repairs, like changing a tire, if you're capable, and it is safe to do so
  • Be aware of the traffic
